Lunch is served on Tuesdays at 12 noon
& programs start at 1 p.m.

This ongoing program provides a delicious and healthful meal, fellowship and a variety of informative, entertaining and insightful programs below.

Reservations for any of the above Love & Knishes Events:

Reservations: Lunch reservations must be made by Friday for the next week’s program. Call Debby Horowitz, Brownstein Jewish Family Service Director, at (203) 267-3177 ext. 105. The suggested lunch donation is $7.50 for adults over 60 and $9.50 for those under 60. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Connecticut Magazine’s # 1 Caterer for the past 10 years, Jordan Caterers of Cheshire, prepares our delicious kosher lunches here. Programs are held at The Federation, Jewish Communities of Western CT, Inc., at 444 Main St. North in Southbury.

June 1- Roger Young: Jazz and Show Medleys
Pianist Roger Young always makes the room sizzle with his medleys by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Fats Waller and Duke Ellington, along with beloved show tunes.


June 15 - Eclectic music from around the world
Musicians Lori Sunshine, Scott Gamble and Liz Rogers believe that music is a gift for everybody, and they share those feelings as they sing and play harp, piano, guitar, mbira (thumb piano) and African drums. Their repertoire includes songs from Scotland, Ireland, Africa, and Israel as well as jazz, golden oldies, Jewish tunes and Broadway favorites.


June 22 - Broadway Babes!
Pianist Jeanne Hinkson and vocalist Kay Mayr perform songs and skits from favorite Broadway shows.


June 29 - Jewish Folksong: The Language of the Soul
Whether an old Yiddish lullaby or his own new tune, Mark Levy of San Francisco delivers songs with such feeling that audiences are mesmerized. He plays guitar and eastern drum and sings in Yiddish, Hebrew, Ladino, Russian, and English. Kick off the summer with some of your favorite songs!


July 6 - Willie Nininger in Songs of Political Conscience
Singer/guitarist Willie Nininger performs music ranging from Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs and Randy Newman to Merle Haggard, Johnny Horton and Sgt. Barry Sadler.


July 27 - Songs That Last Forever
Singer/ guitarist Larry Ayce presents a program of songs that you don’t forget, won’t forget, and that were very popular for a long time. Intrigued? Come and request your favorites!


Aug. 3 - King Bosworth and Margaret Capen in Concert
Mezzo soprano Margaret Capen and pianist King Bosworth perform a special concert including classical lieder and arias, Chopin piano music and a medley of beloved popular pieces.


Aug. 17 Music From the Heart
Pianist Ethel Kaufman teams up with trumpeter Bucky Milam and drummer Jeremy Alston for a program of favorites from the Great American Songbook.


Aug. 24 G.I. Jukebox
Pianist Jeanne Hinkson, mezzo soprano Helen Falcone and drummer John Colella showcase the nostalgic songs from WWII, including “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”, “Tangerine” and “I’ll Be Seeing You.”


Aug. 31 Richard Clark in “Atticus”
In this one man show, actor Richard Clark brings to life Atticus Finch from “To Kill A Mockingbird”. As a loving father, compassionate friend and uncompromising attorney, Atticus represents the divine spark in the human spirit as he leads a cast of other unlikely heroes in this story. The courtroom drama, the poignant interactions between father and children, the harsh Richard Clark in “Atticus” realities of bigotry and hatred blend to make this a compelling theatrical event. The time is 1930’s Alabama but the enduring truth is for now and always.

JCC Upcoming Events and Classes

Summer session art classes
After a short break, Marilyn Maughan is continuing her very successful art classes for the summer. These classes will be two week sessions, held three times per week. They will be held the entire month of July and the first two weeks in August.
2 week sessions as follows: Grades K-4, Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, 8:30am - 10:00am. Grades 5 – 8, 10:15am - 12:15pm. Classes begin on Tuesday, July 6.
Fee for each two week session is $65.00 with a onetime $20.00 materials fee.


Blood Drive
Red Cross Blood Drive to be held on Wed., July 7 from noon until 6:00pm. All those who donate blood during the month of July will receive a coupon for free ice cream from Friendly’s.


JCC and the Jewish Culture Club
On Sunday, July 25th, a panel consisting of Federation Executive Director Rob Zwang, Dr. Peter Jacoby and Dr. Michael Matzkin will present an informative discussion about The Federation’s Expanding The Circle of Peace initiatives in Israel.

JUNE 6 - Beth El Synagogue’s 56th Annual Cantor’s Concert
Sunday, June 6th.
Violinist, Alyce Cognetta Bertz, Concertmaster of the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra, will play virtuoso violinistic pieces accompanied on piano by her sister, Meg Cognetta.


JUNE 10 - Alzheimer’s Support Group
Thursdays, June 10, July 8 and August 12 at 1:30 p.m.
This open, friendly and on-going group is led by Edie Hardwick of the Lutheran Home.


JUNE 12 - The Contest for a Contested City
Saturday, June 12, 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
B'nai Israel of Southbury will hold another educational program in its Middle East Forum series. This one features a presentation on Jerusalem by Joel Abramson.
The program will include a short review of the very long history of this ancient city, going back some 5000 years. Mr. Abramson will describe the emotional attachment felt by Jews, Christians, and Muslims to Jerusalem. The bulk of his talk will deal with its modern history and its central place in the ongoing peace process between Israel and Palestinians.

JUNE 25 - Beth El’s Original “Klezmer Shabbat!”
Friday, June 25, 7:30 p.m.
Some members of Nefesh Klezmer Band will enliven the services with Yiddish music and lively accompaniment. Before the service, an exhibit and guided tour of original Yiddish musical scores and memorabilia from the period of the Yiddish theatre will be presented by Gary Broder from Broder's Rare and Used Books. JUNE 27 - Stories and Sundaes on Sunday
Sunday, June 27, 2:00 p.m.
The Jewish Culture Club of Heritage Village will sponsor “Stories and Sundaes on Sunday” in the Sarah Cooke Hall on Sunday, June 27th at 2PM. Ice Cream sundaes will be served after Muriel shares her stories for a $5 fee. Questions may be directred to Celia Schwartz @ 203-264-0961.

JUNE 28 - It’s a SNAP! Benefits Screening
Monday, June 28, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Nera Clemente, Outreach Worker from the CT Association for Human Services, offers private screenings for the SNAP program (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly Food Stamps). If you are having a tough time putting food on the table, this screening is for you.

Judy Prager, Registered Dietician and Nutritionist at New Opportunities in Waterbury, demonstrates techniques and shares tips on using the George Foreman Grill to make delicious and healthful fruit and veggie dishes indoors. A George Foreman cookbook will be the door prize. Limited seating, so RSVP required!
