Personal and Family Values

Shabbat

A large number of studies have found that philanthropic giving seems to have health benefits that include life satisfaction and better intrafamily relations, as well as some positive effects on physical health. If you equate “net worth” with dollar signs only, you may be missing out on other kinds of measuring devices, such as human, intellectual, and spiritual capital, that are important tools to understanding a family’s or individual’s net worth.

The Foundation has begun to adopt these concepts, and has as its basic agenda the notion of “friend” -raising, not fundraising. Its new Mission Statement ensures that it stays focused on assisting potential donors in realizing how their values can be the “bottom line” of their legacy.

Find out more about how planned giving and legacy opportunities can work for you, your family, and your community by contacting the Foundation – Jewish Communities of Western CT.

Our Donor Advised and Designated Funds

GrandfatherDonor Advised Fund
The Donor makes a minimum gift of $5000 and names the fund. Additional funds may be donated in any amount at any time. Donor may recommend up to 50% of the fund value for distribution to other 501c3 non-profit entities. Minimum distribution is $100. The fund is subject to a 1% administrative fee.

Depending on the agreement, the fund usually ends with death of the donor and spouse. At that time, the remaining funds are transferred to unrestricted funds. The fund may continue to be recognized as a fund if the remaining funds are at least $10,000.

Designated Fund
A donor makes a gift with the income from it to be used for a specific purpose. The Trustees approve the initial gift and contract. The contract varies according to the parties involved. The Foundation has currently adopted a spending policy of 5% of the fund balance at June 30th for the following fiscal year. An administrative fee is charged annually between 1% and 1.5%.

*The Foundation is in compliance with the Pension Reform Act of 2006 in regard to scholarship awards from Donor Advised and Designated Funds.
