Give to the Future

Tzedakah FundThere are a number of funds at the Foundation that support many different interests and causes. Why not consider making a contribution to one of them in memory or in honor of someone or a special event? Or, you could set up your own fund!

Donor Advised Funds may be set up with a minimum amount of $5,000. Donors may recommend 501(c)(3) organizations that they want their fund distributions to support (subject to the Board of Trustees approval). The following funds have already been set up at the Foundation:

Designated Funds are set up for specific purposes with a minimum amount of $5,000. The following funds have already been set up at the Foundation:

  • Federation fundsThe Alan and Janet Hertzmark Scholarship Fund provides one scholarship to a Jewish resident in the state of CT for post secondary school study for baccalaureate degrees based solely upon high academic achievement, in amounts up to $1,000 per year.
  • The Brownstein Jewish Family Service Fund, established by Jack & Edith Brownstein, provides funds for the Brownstein Jewish Family Service program of the Federation.
  • The Charlotte and David Walzer Camping Fund provides assistance for camping programs of the Federation as well as camperships for the needy.
  • The Chevra Kadisha Fund, established by the transfer of the funds of Chevra Kadisha, provides Chevra Kadisha services and funerals for indigent Jews.
  • The David N. & S. Charlotte Walzer Fund was established to provide funds for the general purpose of the Federation.
  • The Doris and Joel Abramson Jewish Heritage Fund provides funding for programs of Jewish culture and education.
  • Traurig FundThe Esther Meth Fund, established through a bequest, provides for the needs of the Federation.
  • The Fay and Max Katz Yom HaShoah Fund provides funding for the Federation’s Yom HaShoah observances.
  • The Gertie Marx Fund, established through a bequest, provides for the needs of the Federation.
  • The Hannah Sachs Fund, established through a bequest, provides for the needs of the Federation.
  • The Henrietta and Thelma Zackin B'nai Shalom Synagogue Fund for Building & Structural Maintenance provides help with the maintenance of B'nai Shalom Synagogue.
  • The Karen Berland Memorial Fund, established by the parents of Karen Berland in her memory, provides a variety of social needs for children and parents.
  • The Liebeskind Israel Scholarship Funds provide scholarships to encourage people to travel to Israel.
  • federation feeding the hungryThe Mazur-Swerdlick Fund, established by Sandra Mazur, provides gifts to needy children, as well as food for seders on holidays such as Chanukah, Passover and Rosh Hashanah.
  • The Rabin Society Fund funds projects and programs for peaceful co-existence in the US, Israel, and around the world.
  • The Ruth Kravitz Designated Fund was established to provide scholarships for higher education.
  • The Sarah and Szymon Cygielman Fund funds social programs for the needy in Israel thru JAFI.
  • The Shobhna Shukla & Matthew Ginsburg Food Bank Fund was established by Roger Shukla to provide quarterly distributions to the food banks in Waterbury.
  • The Shobhna Shukla & Matthew Ginsburg Scholarship Fund was established to provide need based scholarships to residents of Waterbury for post-secondary school study at accredited institutions, on a non-discriminatory manner as to race or religion, in amounts up to $3,000 per year.
  • William Finkelstein, MD FundThe Sophie, Joseph and Mark Brinker Fund was established to provide for the needs of the Federation and overseas needs.
  • The Traurig Fund was established to provide for needy persons and cultural, educational, medical, religious or social service, non-profit organizations in the US.
  • The Waterbury Hebrew Ladies Aid Society Fund provides Jewish camperships to a maximum of $1,000 with additional income to go to the needy as identified by the Brownstein Jewish Family Service program.
  • The William & Audrey Walzer Passport to Israel Fund provides scholarships for children to travel to Israel.
  • The William & Audrey Walzer Alef Bet Preschool Fund provides support for the Alef Bet PreSchool.
  • The William Finkelstein, MD Fund for the Jewish Needy-provides for the health, welfare and maintenance of needy Jews and needy Jewish organizations in the area covered by the Federation with special emphasis on Jews residing in the City of Waterbury.
  • The Zackin Family Fund, in memory of Louis and Dora Zackin, provides a perpetual gift to the Federation in support of its commitment to United Jewish Communities.
  • The Zackin Family Gravesite Maintenance Fund, established by Henrietta and Thelma Zackin, provides for maintenance of Zackin Family cemetery plots.

Family Funds can be set up with less than $5,000 to honor a loved one or for a special purpose, but do not have recommendation privileges. When they reach a value of $5,000, they are then entitled to the same privileges as a Donor Advised Fund.

Tzedakah Funds are set up to educate young people in philanthropy. They may wish to contribute Bar/Bat Mitzvah presents to their fund. When the fund reaches $750, the Tzedakah Sponsorship Fund of The Foundation makes a gift of $250 to their Fund. Thereafter, annual distributions may be recommended from the funds up to 10 percent of the net value of the fund, with a minimum of $1,000 remain in the fund.
